On Feb. 22 SUNY Fredonia’s music business department welcomed Joey DeMaio, founding member, bassist of the internationally renowned rock and heavy metal band Manowar. DeMaio, who is also a composer, lyricist engineer and producer, spoke to a large audience about his musical and business experiences. DeMaio holds a Ph.D in Musical Art.
Having founded Manowar in 1980, Dr. DeMaio has produced 13 albums, eight DVD packages and numerous singles which have each sold millions worldwide. The band has earned gold and platinum awards and completed more than 30 tours all over the world.
In addition, he has produced and recorded several full orchestras and pipe organ recordings and appeared as a special guest conductor with the Cologn Youth Symphony Orchestra in Germany.
He founded a record label in 1999, called Magic Circle Music, to which several metal bands belong. The label has since taken on a film company and an annual musical festival in Europe called Magic Circle Festival, which has attracted more than 46,000 people in just three years.
Armand Petri, a visiting instructor within SUNY Fredonia’s business department, sat down in the studio here at Fredonia Radio Systems to talk with Dr. DeMaio and get a more in depth look at his experiences in music, business, school and life.
